Camino United: Transforming Lives through Soccer

Camino is a local non-profit organization with a mission to empower people to change the community. As part of this incredible mission, Camino United,  a soccer program offered at Camino has become one of the many ways to equip people to live healthy lives.” Coach Samuel Aguilera, the Director of Soccer Ministries at Camino United shared how the program was born out of a need for kids to be a part of something broader. Through these efforts, the program is already seeing success, with young athletes being scouted by college teams with one already committed to Carolina Christian, a University in Winston Salem. The initiative, “Pitches for Progress,” is a key collaboration with Charlotte FC to ensure soccer fields are available throughout the city. By making these fields accessible, the program opens doors for children to develop not only their soccer skills but also important life values. With the partnership of Charlotte FC, on March 4th, 2022 Camino introduced their own new mini-pitch soccer field located on their campus.

A key strength of Camino United is its ability to build trust with players from challenging backgrounds. Coach Sam connects with each athlete on a personal level, respecting language and culture to create a supportive, understanding environment. Discipline is central to the program, with players encouraged to reflect on and improve their behavior if they stray from core values. Aguilera has seen many players take accountability for past actions, demonstrating growth and a commitment to learning. This focus on personal development helps guide youth toward reaching their full potential. “The program is designed to nurture kids, not just in soccer, but in life. We want them to know that there are always other opportunities— and they’re encouraged to reach for their goals, no matter the obstacles.”

Aguilera’s vision for the program is to foster an inclusive environment that not only develops soccer skills but also focuses on mentorship, personal growth, and the development of life skills. His goal is to ensure that all kids in the community, regardless of background, have the opportunity to thrive both on and off the field. “We want this program to serve not just Hispanic communities but to be open to all kids in the area. As a result, we’ve seen real growth, both on the field and off.”

The integration of faith into the training process is something Aguilera mentioned was a core factor. After each practice, Coach Sam leads a devotional, where scripture is read and a brief prayer is offered. Church leaders also join these moments, engaging with the players and offering prayer. While not all players share the same religious beliefs, the emphasis is on teaching respect, kindness, and reflection. Players learn that, even if they do not fully agree with every aspect, they can still embrace the core values and lessons.

A standout success story from the Camino United program is that of Hector, a 12-year-old player who quickly distinguished himself with his advanced skills on the field. From the moment he joined, Hector’s talent was evident, earning him a spot as a key player in the program. His abilities caught the attention of a scout from Charlotte FC, who invited him to train with the team’s U12 Academy. This opportunity is a direct result of the structured drills, mentoring, and soccer training we provide at Camino United. With the partnership of Charlotte FC, on March 4th, 2022 Camino introduced their own new mini-pitch soccer field located on their campus.

Camino’s mission is designed to promote healthy, hopeful, and productive lives for all individuals, not just young athletes, and Camino United is the perfect program to deliver that. Through mentorship, trust, and faith, the program helps players reach their potential both on and off the field. By fostering a strong sense of community, Camino United encourages not just skill development but also the growth of life values like discipline and teamwork, empowering young athletes to thrive and embrace their future with confidence.
