Backpacks for everyone!

The summer heat didn’t keep families away from our 16th annual backpack giveaway! 600 children left with smiles on their faces and backpacks full of supplies to help them start the school year off on the right foot. Our primary care clinic, Camino Clinic, also administered 18 physicals with assistance from our partners at Atrium Health.

Mack’s Automotive of Concord was also at the event, and they hosted an antique car show throughout the day. Classic rock songs filled the venue, and the smell of arepas and empanadas filled the air. The combination of delicious food and great music led to a fun-filled festival atmosphere. Our friends at Mack’s graciously raised money for a Camino Clinic employee who is in the process of rebuilding her home. Our mission is to equip people to live healthy, hopeful, and productive lives. Part of that is helping families as they prepare to send their children back to school. Each school year is important, but this year may be the most important yet because of COVID-19.

77% of Latinos in the Charlotte area reported a decrease in their household income, while 88% said they had experienced financial stress during COVID-19, according to a recent study conducted by Camino Research Institute. To read the entire study, click here.

As an organization, we hope and pray events like our backpack giveaway lessen the financial and mental strain experienced by those in our community. Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers and partners who make events like this possible!
